Sunday, March 4th, 2007Apparently, we (Canada and US) did not learn from the lesson of Maher Arar.
Due to the idiocy of our system of immigration, a nine-year old Canadian boy is being held prisoner in a detention center, along with his Iranian-born parents. Their crime? Being on a plane to Canada which needed to make an emergency stop in Puerto Rico. Full story here.
If your heart does not go out to this boy and his family, then there is something seriously wrong with you.
If we are going to be “winning hearts and minds” then the least we can do is - obviously - to start at home. There’s absolutely no plausible reason that these people should be detained for this. Clemency should be granted immediately.
Please explain to me how this makes our nation more secure. Please explain to me that it’s okay to lock up nine-year-old Canadian citizens and their parents in the name of defending liberty.
